Recipe: Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Traditionally the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holidays are the most deadly on roadways, with alcohol related traffic fatalities increasing during this time. Jiffy Lube, the Florida Dept. of Transportation, and TraumaOne at Shands Jacksonville produce "Recipes 4 the Road" featuring unique, non-alcoholic drink recipes that have been assembled from various restaurants in Northeast Florida.

These recipes are perfect for get-togethers as an alternative to alcoholic drinks, like this Peppermint Hot Chocolate:

Peppermint Hot Chocolate (serves 4)

1/3 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
4 cups Milk
1/3 cup Semisweet Chocolate (chips or bars)
1/4 cup Crushed Peppermint Sticks
Pinch of Salt
Whipped Cream Marshmallows

  • Heat milk in a medium saucepan and slowly mix in cocoa powder until completely dissolved. Add semisweet chocolate and crushed peppermint and simmer over medium heat until melted, about 10 minutes.
  • As soon as mixture comes to a boil, remove from heat, add salt, stir and pour into mugs. Garnish with whipped cream and marshmallows.
